What do we stand for?
Stability & Continuity of Leadership:
Each of us was appointed by an officer for our integrity, our leadership skills, and our commitment to this local. Jess and Jonah have been serving on the board since January of 2023, Lon was appointed in January of 2024, and Alex was newly appointed in April of 2024 after running a tight race for Vice President in December of 2023.
Jess was appointed a member of the IATSE International Bargaining Committee to tackle issues surrounding Artificial intelligence and Emerging Technologies. Since being appointed as Interim President, they have been at all of the recent table reads for the ASA negotiations and will be traveling to LA in late May to bargain for the proposals brought forward by Local 480 and the other ASA jurisdictions.
Since Lon was appointed as Interim Secretary, he has tackled the humongous task of calling each and every member who has had mail returned to the local due to an address error and has updated their record on file. He has also been studying and memorizing the Secretary-Treasurer Handbook (written by the previous Secretary-Treasurer, Marisa Frantz), as well as all of the constitutions, bylaws, and policies for both the Local and the International. In addition, Lon is passionate about adapting technology to further advance our Local's productivity.
Jonah took over for Jess as the Interim Sergeant at Arms and has been handling all of the responsibilities relating to setting up Zoom meetings and communicating with the various committees about their monthly updates. Jonah has also continued to foster solidarity with the work he's done in collaboration with other film unions, locally and internationally.
Alex has not been on the board for very long but has been attending meetings and offering valuable words of wisdom for years. Alex was appointed not only for his dignity and respect but for his invaluable knowledge of the union contracts. He was on the Local's original bargaining committee as well, representing the grip and set lighting departments. He is also very well versed in the constitutions and by-laws of both 480 and the International.
Advocates of Diversity and Inclusion:
The four of us strongly believe in the value of diversity in this Local. Whether that is in leadership or on our sets. That inclusion is evident in our pursuit to urge membership involvement through our many committees. Jonah has spearheaded the Young Workers Committee, working closely with our friends in Local 600 and other state-wide unions to foster cross-union solidarity. Jess has been working with Behind the Scenes Foundation to increase awareness and access to mental health tools and resources for our membership.
Training and Support
Each of us believes that knowledge should not be gatekept but should be shared to lift each other up. This looks like encouraging and recruiting members to participate in the Governance Committee, taking the Steward Training, and attending the many training programs that the Local has to offer. Jess has also been working closely with Business Rep Bryan Evans to build a Leadership Training program that is geared towards members who are moving into second and key positions in their craft. Support also looks like leading by example, like taking Bystander Intervention Training and Mental Health First Aid courses designed to advocate for our fellow crewmates before a crisis occurs on set and being knowledgeable to guide members to support resources.
